Bafokeng Identity
Location: Phokeng, South Africa
Architects: designworkshop : sa
Client: Royal Bafokeng Nation
We are part of a design team tasked to develop the architectural identity for the Royal Bafokeng Nation near Rustenberg in North Western south Africa. The leaders of this nation have long been known for their long-term outlook and for planning ahead. Realising that their wealth from the platinum mines has a limited lifetime, the king, Kgosi, of the Bafokeng Nation is pushing for development of a more sustainable kind.
Together with the architects and other team members, we are developing a set of energy, water, and waste targets and innovative ways in which those target scan be met.
Many simulations were undertaken to determine optimal layout, building geometry, and facade design for high performance buildings that reduce waste production as well as energy and water consumption.
The goal of this project is not only to develop a strategy for future sustainable buildings in this area, but also to put into motion a system whereby green technologies and intellectual property can become the platinum of the future for this nation.
